the core sequence
Live online somatic drawing studio
Weekly practice. Body, breath, movement, mark.
Most artists are trained to see, not sense. The Core Sequence builds the missing foundation—mark-making rooted in your body's intelligence, not borrowed form.
Each week follows the same structure. The framework stays constant. What evolves is your command.
This is drawing as discipline—a practice you return to, not an image you finish.
ONE SEQUENCE. INFINITE MARKS.
The structure is simple. The results expand over time.
You learn how your body generates marks—how weight creates pressure, how rhythm shapes flow, how effort determines line. Week after week, the practice builds capacity and range. What starts as exploration becomes authority.
The framework doesn't confine you. It reveals what only you can make.
WHAT REPETITION BUILDS
This isn't about perfection. It's about presence—training your body to move with clarity and intent, so marks carry actual force.
Over time, drawing becomes effortless. The work holds its own gravity. What was instinct becomes command. What was interior becomes undeniable on the page.
what you’ll practice
Each session moves through seven phases—body, breath, movement, mark, structure, gesture, reciprocity. The sequence trains how your body generates marks and how those marks build into coherent work.
You'll learn:
Body as Vessel: Sensing weight, gravity, impulse—calibrating the body as drawing instrument
Breath as Vehicle: How breath determines mark duration, pressure, and rhythm
Movement as Impulse: Tracking eight effort qualities through the body in space
Mark as Evidence: Translating movement to surface—learning each effort as a mark
Structure as Relationship: How opposition and repetition create compositional coherence
Gesture as Feeling: Micro-textures and how they shape emotional resonance
Reciprocity: Witnessing the exchange between body and surface
The result: A repeatable framework that expands your mark-making vocabulary and deepens structural intelligence—adaptable to any studio context.

faq
-
Traditional drawing often begins with subject or representation. Somatic drawing begins with the body — pressure, breath, rhythm, and gesture — carried directly onto the page as process. One is not “better”, they inform and amplify each other.
-
Artists, movers, researchers, and anyone working with body-based practice. You don’t need to identify as an “artist” to participate, but the class is structured for people invested in studio practice.
-
After signup, you’ll receive a link to a private member page. You’ll be guided through the core sequence—body, breath, movement, mark—using whatever materials you have on hand. the focus is on process and presence, not product. Sessions are live only and unrecorded.
-
Somatic drawing doesn’t replace other modes of making; it deepens them. Painters use it to access gesture, dancers to register movement, writers to anchor attention. The practice offers a repeatable form that can be carried into other disciplines as a ground of relation, rhythm, and return.
-
The essentials are simple. a stack, a roll, a wall, a canvas— any paper using any tools that can register pressure and variation — graphite, charcoal, ink. the point isn’t polished materials but surfaces that can record gesture.
